I followed the creek a bit farther than usual. There’s this one spot where it takes a 90 degree turn and keeps going, and when I went to visit it today, the low water had left me a very nice, very dirty and very deep bank to play in!
I spent some time digging out sticks, but for my trouble it was so worth it! I started stomping around near the edge, and found that the mud I was displacing was causing more mud to peek out above the water level. The farther away from the shore I got, the deeper and stickier the mud became. By the time I was ready for a break, I was sinking almost to my waist, and I could’ve gone quite a bit deeper!
I was a little unhappy about the water thinning the mud out a bit too much, but as I went deeper it got much thicker, and all the fooling around was making the watery top layer much thicker.
I will have to remember to visit this place next year when the water level drops… Although, the entire area was quite squishy so I’m betting if I go earlier in the year I’ll be able to go just as deep from further inland… And this would be a good thing.
This area is a bit iffy with regard to privacy concerns. I can see varying distances down the creek, so I’ll be able to spot intruders well before they have a chance to recognize me, but traffic from the other direction will surely go unnoticed until it’s too late. I’m pretty sure the area is visited by others, which is why I made creeky somewhere else…
If I do end up with unwanted visitors, I’m boned. I got so stuck in the deep muck that it took me several minutes to fight my way out. At least I’m tired enough to sleep well tonight!
If I go there again sometime I’m going to bring some rope so I can pull myself out!
