Bottomless!

Welp. I went back. It seemed deeper this time. I think that is because the more I squish around in it the deeper it gets. Also the thicker it gets, of course. Dragging the thicker stuff up from the bottom thickens the top pretty quickly. I’m really glad for this. It’s quite a workout trying to move around.  Getting there is also fun. Although it’s mostly covered with dead leaves, the area approaching the visible edge of the bog is also very soft and muddy. I bet I could get just as deep from a little bit inland…

This is definitely not an early season pit. During the spring and most of the summer the water level is going to be way too high. I can watch it through the year, though, because the entire area is swampy and squishy and as the year goes on, more and more of it would become accessible. This has the advantage of letting me have my activities hidden by the forest, and this is especially desired during the months when people are actually using the water.  Although, I might have a real challenge keeping the mosquitos at bay!

On my way back home afterward I passed by the ‘original’ creeky and realized just how hard it is to spot.  There’s still a little pool of water in the middle of it, which kinda makes me feel good about next year!  If I feel particularly energetic I might go back and bring back a sample or two of the nice clean mud that’s there to help me get through the winter…
